Giant of Hong Kong - Romans

Okay, I'm getting restless. I wanted to do space but instead started messing with my Giant of Hong Kong (and clones) stuff. I am no expert in Giant of Hong Kong but between 'Playset' magazine and Hugh Walter's 'Small Scale World' blog (featured in the panel to the right) there's enough info to fill in some of the knowledge gaps. GIANT was one of my favorite series of toys as a kid in the '60's and mom could go across the street to the store or to the drugstore and pick them up cheap. She would also take me to F.W. Woolworth's or W.T. Grant's dimestore's and we would get some there as well. GIANT offered, Romans, Vikings, Medieval Knights, American Rev War, American Civil War, Old West Cowboys and Indians, WWII (or modern), and Space. Each series was generally small with only a few figures and a nice large set piece like a ship or castle or fort. We have featured a couple of fort sets before and I did do a photo essay on a Viking ship but then stopped, biding my time while the collection, and a desire to photograph it, gelled. So today we'll start with a quick look at their 'Roman' series. Now, I'm well aware that they may be Roman, or Spartan, or Greek but Giant sold them as Roman's and I'm gonna go with that! Enjoy! Mojo No. 1346733 Fire Dragon

Here's a another dragon I bought at Hobby Lobby. The sculpting 'flows' a bit better in this one than in the Steel Dragon featured yesterday. In point of fact I like the coloring on both of them and this guy looks like he's on fire inside with his skin having the appearance of a just barely cooled lava flow! It measures 8 7/8" (22.54cm) L x 5 1/4" (13.33cm)  wingspan x 4 3/4" (12.06cm) H. Enjoy! Opa Fritz and Oma Bettina

Mojo No. 1023019 Steel Dragon

I went to Hobby Lobby for the first time a few months back and thought it was okay overall but I kind of knew what to expect after reading so many comments about it on facebook. For those of you familiar with these stores it's kind of like Michael's on steroids! It's not the kind of hobby shop I identify with when speaking about 'hobby shops' - the type that specializes in either trains or model kits or a blend of models, not an arts and crafts store. Anywho, Hobby Lobby carries a few dragons made by a company called Mojo. They're nice but not nearly up to the standards of Safari. This Steel Dragon for instance has nice sculpting of the neck, head, legs, and tail but the torso is boxy and the wings are very definitely separate, awkward appearing plug-ins. It measures 5 3/4" (14.60cm) L x 3 1/2" (*.89cm) wingspan x 5 3/4" (14.60cm) H. Enjoy! Opa Fritz and Oma Bettina

TRAIN TIME: Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 Arrives in Las Vegas, Sunday Oct 6, 2019 - Pt 2

Here's some of the stills we took of Big Boy's visit to Las Vegas. Enjoy! Opa Fritz and Oma Bettina

The high rail truck on duty

Now we can see the smoke from 4014 as she comes from the north of the Valley. The day before she was in Caliente, NV

This was taken after I took the video of her arrival. The consist is now parked for the day. The train was on display Monday, Oct 7 and departed Tuesday morning Oct 8.

I have photos of each car in the consist - they might be a bit out of order but they're all there

There's a wall behind me so I couldn't back-up enough to get good side shots

Several hundred visitors came out to greet 4014
