TRAIN TIME: The Edge of Town Layout Gets a Makeover - Pt 9 More New Buildings, A Hill, and Running Trains

Hey guys and gals, sorry to be so late in posting again. My habit of procrastinating kicked in again! Actually I've been busy as heck working on my small Edge of Town (EoT) toy train layout but all my updates have been in the various fb groups I'm in and of course Y'allTube :-)  

I've changed the name of this series a little because the EoT makeover isn't 'starting' to get a makeover, it is in full swing. By now I've added another new building, this time a Woodland Scenics Ready Built Rustic Cabin which has a porch light designed for Woodland Scenics Just Plug system but I haven't yet hooked it up. It's beautifully done and adds a lot of charm to this area of the layout. In the past, this area has been home to a K-Line 'L'-shaped Ranch House, Plasticville Log Cabin, and a variety of structures as I would set up the layout in different themes over the years. Over the past several weeks I've been running different train sets an swapping out vehicles at whim - you know, just having fun!

One of the goals of this rejuvenation project was to add a little more scenery. To that end I started by cutting two pieces of 2" thick Styrofoam into a rough 'L' shape - a bit over sized for the area it was to go on -  then glued them together. Once dry, I whittled the assembly down to fit the space and glued them to the layout top.

Then I ran this Lionel Santa Fe Freight Set #6-11900 for another week...

...the started running a Marx Steam Freight Set, No. 4355/1 for another week...

Here's the hill glued to the layout top. It needs a bit more work :-)

After a couple of requests I thought it would be a good idea to post some kind of index to all my paper/cardboard buildings posts. The only ones I didn't include here were the Keystone buildings. Unfortunately, a simple cut-&-paste from the Excel spreadsheet didn't work as it involved multiple columns which didn't format well in the blog. I ended up having to put all the info in one column for it to work, but it's done now and any further updates should be easy to keep up with.

TRAIN TIME: The Edge of Town Layout Starts Getting a Makeover - Pt 8 More New Buildings and Running Lionel's New York Central Flyer Set

I finally got around to putting on the new chimney and painting the roof of the Plasticville Freight Platform. I purposely wanted a used/beat-up freight Platform so that I could mess with it and try and give it my own touch. It was missing the chimney so I went to the parts box and grabbed a repo chimney that was made for Marx William Crooks passenger cars and super glued it on. The roof was then  given a coat of Krylon Slate Gray. 

New buildings on the layout now include a vintage Plasticville Corner Store and a new MTH lighted Gate Tower. Where the gate tower now stands used to be the spot for one of my Marx tin-litho signal towers. The footprint is nearly the same for both but the Marx tower was much taller and prone to being knocked over by me LOL

The area to the lower right of the layout -which I had begun to refer to as 'The Green' - is being defined by a set of K-Line Split Rail Fences. This set was of wooden fences was made by Lemax and packaged for K_Line back in 2003. At this time I placed an old Plasticville log cabin there as a way to set the scenic tone for the area but it's going to be swapped out here shortly.

AND for the first time in about 18 years I ran my Lionel New York Central Flyer set  #6-21990 with Railsounds. This was one of my favorite train meet runners back in the day and I missed running it. Don't ask me why I didn't play with it on previous layouts - just never got around to it I guess.

Here's the Plasticville Freight Station with new chimney and painted roof

 'The Green' is taking shape with new fences by Lemax / K-Line and a log cabin by Plasticville. When I was still hauling this around to train meets, I used to have the K-Line 'L'-shaped Ranch House in this corner.

To the right in the photo is the new Mike's Train House (MTH) Gate Tower. It has a light but I haven't yet gotten around to hooking it up. Unfortunately I didn't take pics of the Plasticville Corner Store - that'll be featured in a future post. 

TRAIN TIME: The Edge of Town Layout Starts Getting a Makeover - Pt 7 'New' Bridge and Buildings

The EoT saw several changes this week. First, I took off the black Marx plate girder bridge with Illinois Central decals. In its place is another Marx plate girder bridge which was purchased on eBay and needed a little TLC. It had no decals which is what I wanted but needed a repaint job because it looked as if it had already been repainted BUT had fingerprints in the paint finish!! yecch! LOL. Not wanting to go through the mess and hassle of stripping off the old paint, I simply sanded the whole piece and re-painted with silver Krylon Combination Primer/Paint and it turned out just fine. Then I replaced the Marx HO scale passenger platform with a vintage Plasticville station platform. The Marx served me well both on my old Marxville and Plateau layout as a trolley station and on the EoT as my 'main' passenger station but it was a tad too small. The Marx platform is almost as wide and almost as deep as the Plasticville one but the roof is too short. My little O-gauge figures keep bumping their heads on the roof!

Here's yet another project - this time for the siding. I bought  a Plasticville Freight Platform on eBay. It was already assembled but a bit of a mess. It was dirty, the support column broke, and the chimney was missing. I'll keep ya posted on progress.
