Payton Products, Inc. Little Green Army Men - Pt 78 Sets: Miner Ind. Playset No. 1753 Army Action Squadron Task Force Set (my set #3) - Pt 6 Jeep and Howitzer

Of the four vehicles Payton offered, only the Jeep had provisions for towing the howitzer even though that would have been prototypically incorrect. In real life the howitzer would have been too heavy for the jeep to pull and Payton should have at least designed the Troop Carrier Truck to do the heavy work.

Payton Products, Inc. Little Green Army Men - Pt 61 Sets: Pt 3 Payton No. 420 US Troops

Now here's a header bag set from my collection. The prices for MIB Payton sets is outrageous and I ended up losing out on several lately. I had bid over $100 each for several small bags which came up on fleaBay and got blown out of the water! This one however, managed to find its way to me and I'm thankful. It also was an aid in helping me to distinguish Marx from Payton howitzers because at the time I got this, I was still a bit unsure.

Notice the cut-down hydraulic pistons

First generation howitzer is on the left with full hydraulic pistons (that's what I'm calling it because I have yet to find a specific nomenclature for these)
At some point the pistons were shortened as seen on the right

What they would look like in real life

Payton Products, Inc. Little Green Army Men - Pt 16 Jeep & Modified Howitzer - Dark Green SP

Here we have the modified howitzer being pulled by the Jeep. As I said in yesterday's post, in real life this would have been an unlikely pairing but Payton's other vehicles weren't designed to haul the howitzer (or anything else for that matter) leaving only the Jeep to get the job done.

Payton Products, Inc. Little Green Army Men - Pt 15 Jeep & Howitzer - Olive Green SP

It's funny, but when I first got into vintage toy collecting some 34 years ago, it was the Payton Little Green Army Men from my childhood that I remembered most vividly as an adult, and they were the ones I wanted to acquire first. But then I got distracted and it took me forever to finally get a decent representation. This was one of my favorite lash-ups as a kid: the Jeep pulling the cannon. I know now though, that in real life this was an unlikely pairing as the cannon would have been too heavy for a Jeep. It probably would have been towed by a halftrack, but Payton never made a halftrack and neither their Centurion tank, M42 Duster, or troop transport truck had provisions for hauling the cannon. So we're stuck with the Jeep!
