Payton / HG Toys Western Toys - Odds -&-Ends

Payton was one of those companies I never intended to collect. Things would come my way in job lots, and after being identified as Payton, I would say to myself, "Okay, cool" and they'd be put aside until the next batch of toys came in. But over the years, the odds-&ends turned into a 'collection' of sorts and then, along the way I found out that the Payton tooling would go to HG Toys and they would reproduce the same things, albeit in more muted colors. Today's post may not be the end of the Payton story and my collection. As I go through boxes of stuff there may be more out in The Cave waiting to be discovered. Be Blessed and Relish Life! Ed

Here's a recap of what I ended up with:

Payton Cabins

Looking more like blockhouses for a fort, my cabins were the result of multiple job lot purchases wherein one or two components would be included with the lot. Over time I was able to assemble these three cabins.

Payton Teepee's / Tipi's 

HG Toys Teepee's / Tipi's

The HG repops tended to shy away from the bright primary colors of the original Payton castings, and went for a more natural, muted look.

This teepee is missing its top piece. The size and graphics on all four of these teepee's are exactly the same. Knock-offs were either smaller or often had crude changes made to the graphics.

Payton / HG Toys Covered Wagon

The wagon screams 'Payton' but the colors are the muted ones from HG Toys. If any of you readers can kindly shed some more light on this would be greatly appreciated. shed 

Buckboard and Drivers

The Toy House No. 406 Buckboard in two color variations.

These were made by Payton for inclusion into these Toy House sets.

An original muted yellow buckboard by Payton - taken out of its Toy House packaging - with two identical figures. It was often the case in The Toy House packaged sets to have two identical figures, vs. one driver and one riding shotgun figure.

The yellow driver would definitely be Payton, the others are a toss up: Payton(?) HG Toys(?)

The 'Riding Shotgun' figure tends to be harder to find

The Toy House No. 406 Buckboard in Original Header Bag

Here's a nifty buckboard still in its original header bag. The bag includes the wagon, four wheels, hitch, horse, and driver. It's sold by "The Toy House" but after looking at the "Toy Soldier HQ" website (link in the sidebar) it's included under the Payton listings. Was it made by Payton and distributed by The Toy House? In any case, I've seen these being sold as MPC which they are not! MPC wagons are shorter, lack the wooden board detailing (more noticeable when looking at the two wagons up close and personal), the wheel axles are placed differently on the wagons, and the hitches are different. Also, MPC never offered wagons in this aqua color. One of these years I'd like to pick up a wagon just to take it out of the bag and play, but until then this one stays in the bag - Enjoy! Opa Fritz
