Ed's Travelogue: George AFB Air Show 14 October 1979 - Pt 5 The Thunderbirds

This next series of Air Show posts will concentrate on the USAF Aerial Demonstration Team - aka the Thunderbirds. This was the first time I'd seen anything like this and I was enthralled - it was a 'wow' moment and I took a whole bunch of photos! LOL Little did I know then that I'd be stationed at Nellis AFB, the home of the Thunderbirds, nor that I would be able to see them fly right over the house fairly regularly!! Cool :-)  Enjoy! Thunderbirds Are Go - Over The House

Thunderbirds in Outer Space Promo Card

I think for our purposes it might just be best to let Wikipedia explain "Thunderbirds In Outer Space":

"In 1981, many of Gerry Anderson's series were re-edited into TV movies in North America. These were aired on TV under the series title Super Space Theater. Among these was Thunderbirds, with three TV films airing on American television in 1981. They were heavily edited, with new title and credit sequences, some scenes being removed for length and the insertion of extra incidental music throughout. These have not been seen on TV since, although they have been released on home video. The rights issues of these releases also prevented the episodes being released in their original form on VHS video until the 1990s."  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbirds_(TV_series)

One of those heavily edited films was "Thunderbirds In Outer Space" whose promo card we're featuring today. The card itself is a stiff cardboard with a glossy coating and measures 8 1/2" (21.6cm) x 11" (27.9cm). Although the films themselves weren't well received amongst Gerry Anderson purists, it's hard not to like the graphics on  the card. I mean after all, all of the Thunderbird hardware is really nifty looking and it's not difficult to come up with a smashing graphic. Me personally, I like the card, hope you do too - Enjoy!

Royal Mail Tribute To Gerry Anderson Stamps - Pt 3

This is the last part of our look at the Royal Mail’s Tribute to Gerry Anderson Stamp Set. The first part featured a large envelope containing a set of standard lick-‘em-&-stick-‘em type stamps. The envelope also served as a story board for a Gerry Anderson bio as well as a short history of Supermarionation. The second envelope had a set of four lenticular stamps and was a beautifully done tribute to the Thunderbirds. This final portion was a nicely done four-page comic insert. This set is perfect for the Gerry Anderson collector who likes ephemera – those odds and ends of collectibles that either aren’t toys, or models, or comic books. Enjoy!
