Musket and Flintlock Pistol Props from 'The Alamo' Starring Dennis Quade and Billy Bob Thornton

I bought these about 18 years ago and finally got around to photographing them. These were sold as props from 'The Alamo' starring Dennis Quade and Billy Bob Thornton. But here's the problem: I can't prove it. I cannot find the COA or receipts anywhere (at least not yet), but I am still looking. These are non-firing replicas, as the barrels are plugged. The ramrods are made of wood instead of metal and the patch box is simulated by a one-piece decorative plate. However, the hammer's can be cocked back, locked in place, and 'fired' just like a toy gun.

Underside showing how the ramrod is stored

The musket measures 42" (106.68cm) L, the ramrod 19" (48.26cm) L

The patch and simulated flint in place.

Simulated patch box. On real muskets, this was hinged and could be opened to reveal storage for patches.

The flintlock pistol measures 12.25" (31.11cm) L, the ramrod 5" (12.7cm) L

Alamo Movies

On March 6, 1836, The Alamo fell to Santa Anna's army after a short siege which started on February 23. While I've posted my Alamo toys and set-ups in the past, last year and this year (so far) I kind of fell silent as life has whirled around me like a cyclone and I've tried to keep my sanity.

I have no new set-up to offer but I thought that at the very least I could post the few movies in my collection, so here they are. Be Blessed and Relish Life! Ed

Unless otherwise noted, all of the below are items in my collection

1953 Glenn Ford's 'The Man From The Alamo'

Ideal: The Alamo Playset

Ideal put out a whole series of small, cheap playsets starting in the late '50s consisting of a plastic front gate with two identical tin-litho side walls. Some of the sets were The Alamo, a castle, fort, Marine base, Dodge City, and more and they came in header bags and blister cards. For The Alamo set, there were no specific Alamo figures rather, generic Rev War/Colonial figures in red and blue were included along with Frontier accessories.  A good run-down of the sets can be found at Toy Soldier HQ (see side-bar on right). What I accumulated over the years was the result of several different purchases, not a complete set. The Alamo compound gate is also a caricature of the Alamo Chapel facade and measures 5 7/8" (14.92cm) W x 5" (12.7) H. The walls are 10" (25.4cm) W x 2 5/8" (6.66cm) H. The figures are 60mm. Enjoy! There is a cardboard walk-way/parapet stapled to the rear of the gate

Over the years I acquired several extra walls making a larger compound

The Alamo: BMC Alamo Playset No. 4001 - 1994

185 years ago yesterday, the Misión San Antonio de Valero in San Antonio de Béxar, what is commonly referred to as The Alamo, fell to Mexican forces under the command of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna after a three day siege. Santa Anna had considered it a minor engagement, but succeeding battles and the events that followed had major repercussions, not the least of which was Texas separating from Mexico and becoming a Republic and later part of the United States.

Some days ago I stated I was looking for the next series to start writing about here on Toys and Stuff, and now I think I've found it. The Alamo, like dinosuars, was one of those facets of history which always fascinated me and for which I had been buying toys, but never really did anything about it blog-wise. The pictures shown here were first blogged back in 2015 and are of BMC's now iconic Alamo playset. I had sold this set off some years back in favor of acquiring loose BMC pieces and header bags of BMC Alamo figures. HOWEVER, I recently re-purchased this set (at a very reasonable price) and am now waiting for it to be delivered. In the meantime I have been setting up and photographing some other Alamo toys that I can share on the blog. Until then - Enjoy! Opa Fritz

Ed's Travelogue: USAF Basic Training Sep 1978 - Pt11 USAF Basic Training , San Antonio Sights (6) The Alamo - Pt 1

Among the most iconic sites in American history is The Alamo, once nearly surrounded by open fields, but now in the middle of downtown San Antonio. There is simply too much of a story for me to recount here on the blog. All the events leading up the the battle, then the battle itself, and the aftermath have already filled a library's worth of literature. I can't add a thing to that other than my short visit to the site. USAF Basic training and our flight's day pass to San Antonio was chalked full of interesting experiences and it would have been nice to have unlimited time and like a gazillion rolls of film, but alas that wasn't the case. As with the rest of my posts during this visit I gathered what free brochures and handouts I could as well as pick up postcards and souvenir booklets supplement by a few meager photos of my own. So, without further ado, from 1978 I bring you - The Alamo!  Enjoy! Opa Fritz
