You can't have a parade without having a flag bearer. In this case Marx chose to depict a Marine carrying the USMC flag instead of the Stars-&-Stripes. It makes sense, because Marx already had one of their Little Green Army Men sculpts carrying the American flag (although the details of the flag are a bit hard to discern).
