Marx Toys (aka New Marx, Modern Marx, Marx of Miami) Playset No, 3538 No. 1

Back in the '90s I really got into collecting the Marx Toys playsets. They were affordable, and reminiscent of the original Marx sets which were hard to find. Using the same tooling as the originals meant you were gettuing essentially the same things. This was before playsets really took off and new product hit the market with all new figures and accessories. Probably the only real competitor at the time was BMC which produced a series of really nice historical-themed sets. The Internet being what it was at the time, meant the dearth of information made it harder for me toresearch anything. Couple that with a tendency to wait for long periods of time before I open packages and mess with the contents means I didn't discover that the four cannons was missing their barrels and that the set was missing several bags of mexican soldiers! Bummer. About 6 years ago I bought a mint, still sealed set and finally opened it last week - that will be the subject for another post.

This set included Indians in red SP - an homage to the original Marx set. It also has the Fort Dearborn Pioneer figures as well as other early figure sets. Marx put a lot of effort into the tin-litho compound and probably paid hefty royalties to Disney for using the Davy Crockett name and likeness of Fess Parker so it would be understandable that they used what ever figures were already in their inventory to flesh-out the piece count. Until next time - Enjoy! Opa Fritz
