One of the things I gleaned while sorting through these figures is that Marx was continually modifying their tooling to ensure a product that customers would be happy with. Playsets - as we think of them today - were in their infancy, and Marx was experimenting and modifying to see what worked. Also, there was probably more than just one individual tool-&-die maker doing the work, which would account for some of the variations.

Pad Foot
Marx wasn't the only company to utilize pad foot figures. Unfortunately, they just weren't that good of a design, regardless of who the manufacturer was, because they couldn't stand upright on irregular surfaces.
