Vintage (non)Dino Profiles: Marx Mold Group PL-746 The Cavemen Mold Group (1955)

It looks like I'm putting the cart before the horse by presenting the dinosaurs first then the Cavemen as the Cavemen were the first set of prehistoric sculpts to be be produced by Marx, followed by the dino's. The reason is simple. My only figures were in a playset box burried in back of The Cave behind all the Christmas stuff! Once I dug the set out I found out it was missing pieces so there won't be a set review until a couple of more dinosaurs amble their way to the homestead :-)

Apparently, according to "Dinosaur Playsets - EXPANDED EDITION -  An Illustrated Guide to the Prehistorics Playsets of Marx and MPC" by Jeffrey S. Pfeiffer, these Cavemen were produced in 1955 as a means to keep the Marx sculptor busy while the dinosaurs went through the corporate approval process. Marx Mold Group PL-749 - The Large Mold Group, which featured the Brontosaurus, Pot Bellied T-Rex, and Kronosaurus, wouldn't come out until two years later in 1957.

The original colors for the Cavemen were: light tan, brick red, and cream. My one-&-only Marx plyset is from the late 1970' and the Cavemen are of the "butterscotch" tan variety. The figures are 45mm tall and consists of:

-Caveman walking, holding club

-Caveman standing, holding rock over head

-Caveman standing, holding club and knife

-Caveman squatting, holding spear

-Caveman kneeling, holding rock and piece of flint

-Caveman kneeling, skinning rabbit

As time permits I'll feature photo essays of each figure. Until then...

Enjoy! Opa Fritz

Early vs Late colors

I only have a few of the light tan scuplts and they're all broken. The guy on the left is my most intact sample.
