Four days ago I posted a lovely Eldon No. 902 Cargo Plane I believe was based on the Convair R3Y Tradewind Flying Boat. Over the years I had acquired two of these, each with a different set of vehicles. Since then I've come a cross some information which helps solve a little mystery. Enjoy! Opa Fritz
Disclaimer: I took the photos of the toy nearly two years ago before investigating this thing in detail. As a result there may be a disconnect in my photos and what I've learned actually comprised the two sets.
Based on several catalog pages and ads, it appears as if these planes were initially released with three vehicles that didn't actually fit inside the plane, despite what the catalog would have one believe. The catalog page you see here also states the plane is 20"L while mine only measures 11 1/4"L. I find it hard to believe Eldon would totally revamp its tooling in just a couple of years to accommodate the vehicles. It's more likely this was another artists rendering showing the proposed product but somewhere along the line Eldon had to change their plans and went with a smaller sized plane instead. Unless someone out there in the collecting world can show an actual example of this larger 20" plane, my guess is that Eldon sold the smaller plane with larger vehicles in some form of display box. Later, they would re-package it under another stock number with smaller vehicles. Just a working theory of course waiting for validation.

Set No. 850:98 U.S. Navy Cargo Plane
In the previous post, I speculated that the smaller vehicles shown in the photo below, were included in a latter set. Guess what? I was right!
Hello Ed, regarding your "working theory" above this might help: Eldon produced the aircraft in the larger size mentioned in the catalogue, as well as the smaller one you have. It was sold unassembled, in a red, white and blue box, along with the larger vehicles and ramp. The plane was produced in a silver-grey colour, with the green vehicles and ramp which you have got, and also in red, white and blue component parts with vehicles to match, as in the catalogue picture. There are photographs of both kinds on the "Worthpoint" site. I found them by chance when trying to identify the rocket launcher vehicle (which turned out to be the Le Tourneau transporter for the Corporal nuclear-capable missile). You may be able to find them direct by Googling "Eldon Big Poly cargo plane /seaplane with ramp/vehicles" for the red/white/blue items, and then by scrolling down to the "Similar items" you will see the silver grey and green set with box. (It is headed "1950s 50s 60s Eldon Big Poly cargo plane US Navy w/box plastic USA read" on Worthpoint, but a direct Google search does not seem to find that one!). Worthpoint also has pictures of the smaller blue plane and red vehicles (including jeep) and ramp, which you have already identified as being sold in the cardboard wrapper rather than boxed. I hope this helps, and thank you for sharing your vast collection of photographs.
ReplyDeleteRobert - very quickly - THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! :-) For the kudos and for the information! I did find all the photos you mentioned on Worthpoint and have downloaded them! Looks like it's time for yet a third installment regarding this airplane. Over the years I've gotten into the habit of posting the photos, writing about what I know or what I guess, and moving on. While I hate loose ends, when there are so many toys out there from so many companies, it's inevitable. All that being said, it's terrific when a loose end finally does get tied up and for that I thank you! Mystery solved - yay! :-)
