Space Art: Pyro X-300 (2nd Version)

When I came across this vintage art featuring what is clearly the Pyro X-300, I knew I had to try and replicate it, so I did one in B&W like the original, and one in color. The background was culled from the Internet, while the Moon was a picture taken by my wife. As with the pic I posted yesterday, I didn't bother to make the broken fins on my sample look longer, leaving the toy just as it looks like in my collection.

The real reason I bought this toddler's toy was the potential I saw in it in a viable space themed setting. After some consideration I'm okay with the bright colors. Bright colors would make sense if, let's say, the thing crash landed and its locator devices were damaged. Those bright colors would stand out should a search party fly overhead. Secondly, it reminded me of the Robinson family's pod on "Lost in Space".

Pods of this sort are perfect for short hops away from either a mother ship, or from a colony and that's what I envisioned. A lone scientist takes his instruments and heads away from the colony to take readings. Readings of what? ummm pollen 😄 Okay, use your imagination. I used a couple of Marx Swoppet-style astronauts for these photos. By using a removable head and putting it on two differently posed bodies a scientist at work can be simulated. The Marx figure is 65mm so that gives you an indication of what works well with the space pod. Enjoy! Opa Fritz

Depending on how I photograph this TootsieToy Flash Gordon rocket ship, either Ming's face (which appears on the port wing) or Flash Gordon's face (which appears on the starboard wing) will appear. From this angle, Ming appears, ergo the title "Ming 1". Enjoy! Opa Fritz

The Space Ark

While the Space Ark from "When World's Collide" may have originally been conceptualized as taking off from a long ramp, it's 'pointy tube with fins' design was a staple of  '50s space art. Here the Pegasus Models version is posed upright on an alien planet. Enjoy! Opa Fritz

Buck Rogers

During the 1930's Rappaport Bros put out a series of kits wherein kids could melt pot metal and pour the molten metal into molds! Once cooled they would take them out, clean up the edges, and paint them with lead based paints - pretty much the only thing available at the time. One of the series of molds was the hugely popular - at the time - Buck Rogers which had a couple of ships and several figures from the comic strip. All the casting's were 'flats' which was also popular at the time, and therefore lacked that fullness that we're used to in toys nowadays. While not impossible to make something nifty out of a flat, this pic will show that it's doable. Enjoy! Opa Fritz
