Royal Mail Tribute to Gerry Anderson - Captain Scarlet

This is the ninth in a series of eleven postcards issued by the Royal Mail as their tribute to the genius of Gerry Anderson. Today's postcard features Supermarionette Super Star 'Captain Scarlet'. This show featured some really cool sci-fi special effects. I haven't yet bought the DVDs but did borrow the set from a co-worker and watched a few episodes. I didn't get a chance to see them all as he was getting ready to transfer out but one day I'll pick up a set and watch them all! Enjoy!

Royal Mail Tribute to Gerry Anderson

Here's the next offering in our coverage of the Royal Mail's tribute to Gerry Anderson, Thunderbird 2 on the launch ramp. This set of eleven post cards was offered last year and this is the eighth card Toyys& Stuff has featured to-date.
Now, thanx to Woodsy and Wotan over at Moonbase Central, we have a cool site to share with you. Those neat models you see in Gerry Anderson's shows had to be built by somebody. Well that 'somebody' was Master Models in the UK. The link will take you to a page showing many of their models - some in the studio, and some as they appeared on-screen. Really neat stuff here. So on that note, Enjoy the Gerry Anderson post card artwork!

Royal Mail Post Card - Thunderbird 3

Last year the Royal Mail released a series of post cards featuring art from British postal stamps commemorating the genius of Gerry Anderson. Gerry Anderson pioneered a technique called Super Marionation which plussed-up normal puppetry marionation techniques and made it fun to watch for kids. Combined with science fiction story lines, fun characters and really cool gadgets, vehicles, and space ships, Anderson's shows were a staple of '60s Saturday mornings. Today's card features Thunderbirds 3, although I must admit that the rocket is a tad hard to discern in the artwork, but I do like the modern styling of the art. Enjoy!

Royal Mail Post Card: Stingray

In our continuing look at the Royal Mail's Tribute to Gerry Anderson, today's post card features Stingray. Stingray was the first British Supermarionation show to be filmed in color as well as the first British televesion show to be filmed in entirely in color and aired in 1964-65. The story revolves around a combat submarine - 'Stingray' - whose mission of exploration leads it to discover both friendly and hostile aquamarine civilizations. The series nemesis is the 'aquaphibians' an underwater warrior race wif warrior subs. Much of the underwater action wasn't really filmed in water but rather behind a large water tank. All the models remained dry while the camera was positioned in front of the tank giving the illusion that the submarines were submersed. I do remember this show from my childhood as it aired here Stateside, but being a Saturday morning offering my attention was drawn to other programs and I never really did get into that much :-( Perhaps some day I'll buy the DVDs and pick up where I left off. Enjoy!

Royal Mail Post Card: Thunderbird 4

There are seven more post cards in this series, but I think we'll need to interrupt it every so often and present some toys. I mean after all, today is Saturday and Saturday's have been set aside for Sci-Fi & Fantasy and there's plenty of Sci-Fi and Fantasy toys out there to look at. Today, let's continue our look at the Royal Mail's tribute to the Genius of Gerry Anderson as we present the Thunderbird 4 post card. Enjoy!

Royal Mail Post Card: Filmed In Supermarionation

Our tribute to the Genius of Gerry Anderson continues today with the Royal Mail post card featuring the re-print of the "Filmed in Supermarionation" stamp. 'Supermarionation' was the term given by the Anderson team to their version of high-end puppetry, or marionation. For many years they provided children of the world with great science fiction stories combined with terrific special effects and high-tech  puppets which grew ever more sophisticated with each new series. Enjoy!

Royal Mail Post Card: Fly Around The Universe in Fireball XL5

Our second in the Royal Mail tribute to the genius of Gerry Anderson is this dramatic three-quarter rear view shot of the Fireball XL5 spaceship in black and white. These post cards are all reproductions of postage stamps issued by Royal Mail last year and are a terrific addition to any Gerry Anderson collection. The world of Gerry Anderson was quite extensive and his design team really came up with some beautifully executed hardware. I do remember watching Fireball XL5 which came out in 1962 and aired on NBC on Saturday mornings. Those who grew up in the '50s & '60s here Stateside remember Saturday mornings as kiddie time. Cartoons, Westerns, Charlie Chan detective movies, Commando Cody serial re-runs, and much, much more vied for our attention from 6AM to well into the afternoon time. What a wonderful time to grow up. For this reason I was never a regular viewer of Fireball XL5 as there were just too many shows to choose from. Still, today when I read about it or watch clips of it on YouTube, the characters all come back to life for me. Let's hope these cards bring back some memories for you. Enjoy!

Royal Mail Post Card: FAB The Genius of Gerry Anderson

I had hoped to buy enough time posting the Supercar comic to show progress on a new space diorama I've been making, but the work has been very slow going with the weather being just too hot and me coming home just too pooped to do anything. I have the base cut and Styrofoam pieces glued to it but haven't yet started to carve out the details. In the meantime...

A friend of mine in Scotland sent me a series of Post Cards issued by the Royal Mail last year January along with some other goodies. What makes the set so neat for our blog is its tribute to the Genius of Gerry Anderson! Soooo. I thought I'd try to buy more time :-)  and present these for your enjoyment. Many Many Thanx Graeme, the cards are great and much appreciated!

As always - Enjoy!
