King & Country 54mm Sands of Iwo Jima - Diorama Base

We're capping off our look at King & Country's Sands of Iwo Jima set by posting the diorama base made to display the figures. We'll also take a look at BMC's Iwo Jima playset with its plastic reproduction base.

The K&C base is made out of a dense foam of the type that would be poured into a mold and allowed to set up. The details embedded in the base are awesome, from bunkers to destroyed Jeeps there's a wealth of detail. The base itself is only about 18" square and you would be hard pressed to display all the figures made for this series. Iwo Jima is a volcanic island and is characterized by it's grey/black sand which is aptly represented here. Enjoy! Opa Fritz and Oma Bettina

BMC Iwo Jima Playset

The BMC Iwo Jima playset features a plastic reproduction of the K&C diorama base. It was molded in two pieces joined together in the middle and the mountain has a top piece (which is missing from my K&C original). Atop that would be displayed the iconic raising of the flag on Mount Suribachi based on the famous Joe Rosenthal photo from February 23, 1945. The K&C version of the flag raising would be prohibitively expensive for me so the BMC version was just fine. I sold the K&C base and the BMC set some time ago in order to concentrate on European Theater of Operations (ETO) toys. The figures are next to go!

I sold the BMC set and kept the figures sealed in their original bags so there are no photographs of the entire set-up

King & Country 54mm Sands of Iwo Jima - MC016 Marine Crouching w-Rifle, Pointing

Here's the last Marine figure in my set of King & Country 54mm Sands of Iwo Jima sculpts. As stated in previous posts, these figures were given to me many years ago in exchange for some work I did for a friend and I don't know how many were in the series. Enjoy! Opa Fritz and Oma Bettina
