Marx 54mm Astronaut #6 Republic Moon Suit

Okay, finally something to write about other than guys walking around on the Moon with regular pressure suits. Of course, when Marx made these figures in 1961, NASA had yet to finalize a design for a suit that could be used for the Lunar surface so naturally Marx took what was known to them at the time and utilized it. For us kids growing up in the '50s & '60s it was no biggie. What mattered was that we had Astronauts of some kind to play with.

The suit featured today was a concept suit developed by Republic Aviation. It was great that Marx included this as part of their 54mm Astronaut line-up because it showed the in-work design concepts of the time and gave something for kids to dream of. The toy consisted of three pieces: the figure and a two-piece suit and is pretty faithful to the original concept. We know now of course that the suit NASA finally approved and used was much more suitable for the craft in which it flew allowing for more flexibilty than it appears this early concept had. Enjoy!
