Over the years I picked up several of these firing howitzers but only one in untouched, pristine condition. The others, while still in great shape, had been painted with a camouflage scheme by previous owners. I'm okay with stuff like that because it often means I get the piece for a lower price than normal. This one appears to have an early version of the firing mechanism - simply an 'L' shaped metal rod sticking out of the breech. Be Blessed and Relish Life! Ed

Marx Battleground and Training Center Playset Pieces - Marx 105mm Firing Howitzer - Silver HP
Marx Battleground howitzers are awesome. Not only did they look like the real thing, they had plenty of poke-your-eye-out fun with those shell firing mechanisms. Measuring 7" (17.78cm) L x 2.25" (5.71cm) W x 3" (7.62cm) H, they were decently sized as well. The version shown here is the long-barreled version, Marx also made a short-barreled version which we'll cover in another post. While these are relatively easy to find in good condition, the tiny shells that came with them are a bear to find. Be Blessed and Relish Life! Ed
A few 105mm howitzer photos culled from the Internet
This one appears to have a later firing mechanism with a plastic knob over the metal rod at the breech. This would allow the kid to pull back on the spring-loaded firing mechanism a lot easier.
