TRAIN TIME: Ertl #F004 1/48 Scale) Diecast Hershey's 1932 Northrop Gamma Plane - Coin Bank (1995)

The Northrop Gamma has an interesting history. Designed as a cargo plane in the 1930s it went on to be used as a fighter plane by the Chinese during the early stages of the Second Sino-Japanese War. It also saw military service with the Spanish Republic air forces. TWA used it as a mail delivery plane, and it was also used as a flying laboratory and record breaking aircraft.

This toy has been sitting in The Cave for nearly 25 years. The copyright date is 1995 and I bought this shortly after they came out. Sooo, while I wait for the next package of K-Line Hershey's trains to arrive I thought it was time to finally take photos of this and post to the blog.  Ertl's version is interpreted as a Hershey's high-speed chocolate delivery air service perhaps? Or maybe as a contender in the Reno Air Races? There is no mention of scale on the packaging so I'm making a calculated guess that this is 1/48 scale. It's a diecast metal plane which doubles as a coin bank. The coin slot is on top of the fuselage just forward of the cockpit, while the cover is on the bottom of the fuselage tucked between the fixed landing gear. The plane measures 8.25" (20.95cm) L x 13.25" (33.65cm) wingspan x 2.5" (6.35cm) H.
