If anyone had mentioned ghost town's to me as a kid, my immediate thoughts would have been a desolate, abandoned gold mining town somewhere in the American West. But really, abandoned towns can be found all over the country, their demise usually a result of the town's main economic reason for being drying up. In this case it was the charcoal iron market which began to decline. Fayette was one of the most lucrative iron-smelting operations and its blast funaces ran from 1867 to 1891.
