Up until USAF Basic Training, my only experience being on a military installation was a trip to the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois with the Cub Scout pack I was in. Lackland is a big base with multiple missions, basic training being only one of them. The following postcards and photos are in no particular order. Enjoy! Opa Fritz
They made a big thing of 'The 1000-Person Dorm' back in the day.
By this time, any structure built to house the troops was being called a 'dormitory' in the Air Force. The term 'Barracks' had gone the way of the dinosaur
The Hospital as I recall
I don't care what they say - those damn pneumatic syringes hurt like hell!
Yup, it be like this! I actually liked the food - I never had a problem with chow hall food in my career. BTW "Chow Hall'' is an older term and one of endearment as I use it. Today, they're supposed to be called 'dining facilities' - yeah, whatever! 'Chow Hall' is tradition and as I use it in no way denegrates their food or their service! I actually enjoyed eating there - hell, better that me trying to cook I can tell you and for the holidays they put on quite a spread!!!
Food Service Specialists: You guys ROCK!
My Squadron
The Parade Ground
Grand stands and reviewing stand.
Okay, they made us do a lot of marching during basic. I am here to tell you, that was the very last time in the 24 years that followed that I had to do any damn marching!! LOL
The old style barracks were still in use back in 1978
This must've been a big deal because I saved the article. Maybe it was because of the F-105! :-)
